35th Annual BMI Film, Television & Visual Media Awards
On May 15th, 2019, distinguished members of the music in media community convened for the Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI)’s 35th Annual Film, Television & Visual Media Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by BMI CEO Mike O’Neill and Vice President Creative – Film, TV & Visual Media, Doreen Ringer-Ross, the exclusive black-tie affair honored the artistic achievements of their top performing composers.
Heroic Oscar-nominated film composer, six-time Grammy Award winning recording artist, and master jazz trumpeter, Terence Blanchard was this year’s BMI Icon Award recipient. Widely admired for his long term creative collaboration with director Spike Lee and his imposing original compositions, Blanchard is one of the greatest living music creators whose illuminated work challenges and inspires those in his midst and beyond. He is the visionary musical storyteller behind groundbreaking films including Inside Man, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, Clockers, Crooklyn, Love & Basketball, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, Summer of Sam, 4 Little Girls, Cadillac Records, Barbershop, and Chi-Raq. Most recently, Terence has been lauded for his staggering, palatial score for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, an exploration into the life of Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective to work in the Colorado Springs police department and his mission to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. The critically acclaimed film won the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered six Academy Award nominations, taking home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The phenomenon surrounding BlacKkKlansman led to Blanchard’s sixth Grammy victory, as well as his first Oscar and BAFTA nominations.
BMI’s Classic Contribution Award was given to the highly decorated jack of all trades, William Ross. In his far-ranging career, Ross has served as a composer, orchestrator, arranger, bandleader, and conductor, trusted by global superstars including Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Seal, and Michael Bublé. He is the musical force behind Destination Wedding, Tuck Everlasting, The Tale of Despereaux, The Little Rascals, My Dog Skip, and Steel Magnolias. His sweeping and ornate arrangements have been performed on the world stage for the opening and closing ceremonies of various Olympic Games and Super Bowls, as well as the 81st Academy Awards.
Multiple BMI Award winners of the celebratory gathering included Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, Venom, Creed 2), Brian Tyler (Crazy Rich Asians, Hawaii Five-0, Magnum, P.I.), Harry Gregson-Williams (The Equalizer 2, Mark Mothersbaugh (The Lego Movie 2, Hotel Transylvania 3) Nathan Barr (The House With a Clock in Its Walls, Sneaky Pete), Tyler Bates (The Punisher, Deadpool 2), Rob Simonsen (The Upside, Blood Bloods), and Mac Quayle (American Horror Story, 9-1-1). Prolific Icelandic composer, Atli Örvarsson garnered the most awards of the night for his respective work on FBI and the hugely popular Chicago franchise — Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Fire.
